Pet Safety Tips for Halloween

Kicking Off Pet Wellness Month

Halloween can be a fun time for families, but it’s important to remember the safety of your pets during the spooky season. As we kick off Pet Wellness Month this October, here are some essential tips to keep your furry friends safe and happy:

  1. Avoid Dangerous Treats: Halloween candy, especially chocolate and sugar-free candies with xylitol, are toxic to pets. Even small amounts can cause serious harm. Make sure all candy is kept out of your pet's reach in secure, pet-proof containers. If you suspect your pet has eaten candy, contact your vet immediately.
  2. Pick the Right Costume: If you decide to dress your pet up, ensure their costume is safe and comfortable. Choose costumes that don’t restrict movement, breathing, or vision. Make sure there are no small parts that can be chewed or swallowed. It’s also a good idea to let your pet try on the costume before the big day to make sure they’re comfortable.
  3. Watch the Decorations: Halloween decorations can be hazardous to pets. Items like strings of lights, electric cords, candles, and small decorations can be tempting to chew on, potentially leading to serious injury. Always monitor your pet around decorations, and consider opting for pet-safe alternatives like battery-operated candles or out-of-reach lighting.
  4. Calm Trick-or-Treaters Anxiety: The constant doorbell ringing and influx of strangers can stress out pets. If your pet tends to get anxious, set up a quiet room with their bed and toys where they can retreat during trick-or-treating. You can also play calming music or use anxiety-reducing products like calming sprays or treats to help them stay relaxed.
  5. Outdoor Safety Precautions: If your pet joins you for outdoor festivities, make sure they are securely leashed and wearing up-to-date ID tags. Pets can easily become frightened by loud noises, spooky costumes, or the increased foot traffic, potentially leading to escape attempts. Reflective gear and proper lighting are also essential for night-time walks to keep your pet visible and safe.
  6. Monitor Pumpkin and Decorative Plants: While pumpkin is often healthy for pets in moderation, moldy or decorative pumpkins can cause stomach upset or worse if ingested. Similarly, decorative plants like corn stalks and gourds may also pose choking hazards or digestive issues.

Bonus Tip: After-Halloween Clean-Up

The morning after Halloween, do a thorough check of your home and yard for any stray candy wrappers, small decorations, or items that your pet could potentially eat. Keeping your home clean and pet-safe is essential after the festivities wind down.
