The Ark is fantastic! I have used the Ark for all three services (day care, boarding, and grooming) for over 10 years and I am always extremely pleased with the quality of care my fur babies receive.

The staff is so caring & loving, the facility is clean and comfortable. No more days locked in a kennel with little to no "free" time. Taz loves the Doggy Day Care. We travel and sometimes cant take Taz. Boarding is just a long doggy day care day and he is lovingly cared for. LOVE LOVE LOVE everything!

As the days grow longer and the weather warms up, both you and your dog are probably eager to spend more time outdoors. Spring and summer bring plenty of opportunities for fun, but they also come with unique challenges for pet owners. From shedding winter coats to staying safe in the heat, here’s how you can prepare your dog for the warmer months ahead. 1. Schedule a Spring Grooming Session After a long winter, your dog may have a thick coat ready to shed. Regular brushing helps remove excess fur and prevents matting, which can be uncomfortable as temperatures rise. If your dog has a long or double coat, consider a professional grooming session to trim excess fur while keeping their natural protection against the heat intact. Tip: Regular brushing also reduces shedding in your home, so stock up on a good de-shedding brush! 2. Protect Against Pests Warmer temperatures mean fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are back in full force. These pests can carry diseases like Lyme disease, heartworms, and ehrlichiosis. Action Steps: Ensure your dog is on a vet-approved flea and tick preventative. Use a heartworm preventative, especially if you live in an area where mosquitoes thrive. Check your dog for ticks after walks in grassy or wooded areas. 3. Adjust Their Exercise Routine Longer, sunnier days make outdoor activities more enticing, but warmer weather also means adjusting your dog’s routine to avoid overheating. Hot Weather Tips: Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid peak heat. Bring fresh water and a collapsible bowl on long walks or hikes. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. 4. Keep Up with Hydration Dogs need more water in the warmer months to stay hydrated. Always provide clean, fresh water at home and on the go. Hydration Hacks: Add ice cubes to their water bowl for a cool treat. Invest in a pet-friendly water fountain to encourage drinking. If your dog enjoys fruit, frozen watermelon or blueberries make refreshing snacks. 5. Protect Their Paws Hot pavement, sand, and sidewalks can burn your dog’s paw pads. Before heading outside, test surfaces by placing your hand on the ground—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pup! How to Protect Their Paws: Walk on grass or shaded paths. Consider dog booties for hot pavement. Apply a pet-safe paw balm to protect and soothe pads. 6. Ensure Their ID & Microchip Information is Updated Spring and summer often mean more outdoor adventures, but also a higher chance of your dog slipping out the door or getting lost. Checklist: Make sure your dog’s collar has an up-to-date ID tag. Verify that their microchip details are correct. Consider a GPS pet tracker for extra peace of mind. 7. Keep Parasites and Allergies in Check Springtime allergens like pollen and grass can cause itchy skin, watery eyes, and sneezing in dogs. If you notice excessive scratching or licking, consult your vet about allergy relief options. Common Allergy Triggers: Pollen, grass, and mold spores. Flea bites (even one bite can cause an allergic reaction). Certain foods or environmental factors. 8. Prepare for Travel & Outdoor Adventures If you’re planning a vacation or weekend trip with your pup, make sure you’re ready with travel essentials: Dog Travel Must-Haves: A well-ventilated travel crate or seat belt harness. Their favorite toys and a cozy blanket. A portable water bowl and dog-friendly snacks. Vet records in case of emergency. 9. Create a Cool & Safe Space at Home Even if your dog loves the sun, they need a cool retreat indoors or in the shade. Cooling Strategies: Provide a shaded area in the yard. Use cooling mats or elevated pet beds. Keep a fan or air conditioning on during extreme heat. Enjoy the Season Safely with Your Dog! Spring and summer are the perfect seasons to explore the outdoors, take longer walks, and enjoy quality time with your furry friend. By following these tips, you’ll ensure your dog stays healthy, happy, and comfortable all season long. Do you have any special warm-weather activities you enjoy with your dog? Why We’re Grateful for Pets This Thanksgiving
By Adam Harbin November 19, 2024
Winter is here, and as temperatures drop, your pet’s grooming routine may need some adjustments to keep their coat, skin, and paws healthy during the colder months. Grooming isn’t just about keeping your pet looking their best—it’s also vital for their overall well-being. At The Ark Pet Spa & Hotel, our grooming team is here to share essential tips to help you care for your furry friend this winter season. 1. Don’t Skip Regular Grooming Even though your pet might not be running through muddy puddles as often in the winter, regular grooming is still crucial. A clean, brushed coat helps distribute natural oils that keep their skin moisturized and their fur healthy. Regular grooming also helps to prevent matting, which can trap moisture and cause irritation during cold months. 2. Protect Paws from Winter Hazards Ice, snow, and salt on sidewalks can be tough on your pet’s paws. Trim the fur between their paw pads to prevent ice from clumping and causing discomfort. After walks, wipe their paws to remove any salt or chemicals that could irritate their skin. You can also consider applying a paw balm or wax for extra protection. 3. Adjust Bathing Routines Winter air can dry out your pet’s skin, so it’s best to limit baths during this season. When bathing is necessary, use a moisturizing shampoo to prevent dryness. Follow up with a pet-safe conditioner to help lock in moisture, and make sure your pet is completely dry before they head back outside. 4. Focus on Hydration Winter weather can be dehydrating, which affects your pet’s skin and coat. Make sure your pet always has access to fresh water, and consider adding wet food to their diet for extra hydration. A humidifier in your home can also help keep the air (and your pet’s skin) from becoming too dry. 5. Keep Up with Nail Trims Your pet’s nails may not wear down as quickly in the winter since they’re spending more time indoors. Long nails can affect their balance and cause discomfort, so make sure to keep them trimmed regularly. Our grooming team at The Ark can handle nail trims with care and precision. 6. Brush, Brush, Brush Brushing is key in the winter to remove loose fur, prevent matting, and stimulate blood circulation. Regular brushing also helps reduce shedding and keeps your pet’s coat in top condition. For double-coated breeds, brushing is especially important to prevent their undercoat from becoming impacted. 7. Don’t Forget About the Ears Ears are often overlooked but can become prone to infections in the winter due to trapped moisture or dirt. Check your pet’s ears regularly and keep them clean using a vet-approved ear cleaner. Groomers at The Ark can also handle ear cleaning during your pet’s grooming appointment. 8. Consider a Professional Groom If you’re unsure how to adjust your pet’s grooming routine for winter or simply want to give them extra care, schedule an appointment with a professional groomer. At The Ark Pet Spa & Hotel, our experienced groomers provide personalized care to keep your pet comfortable and looking their best all winter long. By following these winter grooming tips, you’ll ensure your pet stays comfortable, healthy, and happy throughout the season.
